Dr John HooperOur identity, formed by both "Nature and Nurture", makes us who we are today. In trying to understand some of those influences, rarely can we gain insights into generations past, possibly beyond our grandparents — and yet we have inherited some of their traits.
Professor Gladwish has spent a lifetime researching the social history of each generation, sometimes through documents which are not available to the ordinary family historian, thus setting each person within a particular context. We encounter real people caught up in the joys and sorrows of their lives.
A clever technique in telling the story is through the use of a ghost, John, who gives continuity to events and reminds the reader of links to previous incidents. The results of many years of research, some of which has been published previously, are here collated and presented in the form of a novel which embodies the rich material into a coherent whole.
Of particular interest is that Professor Gladwish recounts, in great detail, personal experiences which parallel those of some of his ancestors — sometimes the "visions" he had meant little at the time, but as his research unfolded he discovered who the people in the experience were, and what was happening to them. Professor Victor Gladwish has given us a generous gift in sharing a lifetime of research into one family line of his ancestors: the Gladwish Family.
What the book covers
Written by Prof. Victor E. R. Gladwish, C de M, The Power of the Memory Gene is a 496-page historical family narrative covering 1,000 years of the Gladwish (de Glidewisse) family line in England and Western Europe. It is structured as thirteen episodes, each spanning a century, from 944 AD to the present day.
The research draws on primary sources including the College of Arms, Windsor Archives, the Bodleian, East Sussex Record Office, Canterbury Archives, and civic records from France and Germany — sources rarely accessible to ordinary family historians. The book traces the lineage from Baron von Ravensburg through the Norman settlement of Sussex, the de Glidewisse family of the Rape of Hastings, and onward through the St. Leger, Socknersh, Aquila and Gladwish lines to the 20th century.
